Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center is proud to be an approved provider for the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program, Texas' Education Savings Account program.
TEFA gives eligible Texas families the opportunity to use state-provided education funds for approved educational expenses outside the traditional public school setting. Depending on a child's eligibility and circumstances, approved expenses may include certain educational therapies and related services. At BVRC, we're excited to help families explore whether their TEFA funds can be used toward eligible therapy services.
What is the Texas Education Freedom Accounts Program?
The Texas Education Freedom Accounts program was established through Senate Bill 2 and begins with the 2026–2027 school year. Through the program, eligible families receive an Education Freedom Account (EFA) that can be used for approved educational expenses, including private school tuition and certain educational goods and services. The program is administered through the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts and a certified educational assistance organization.
For families of children with disabilities, additional funding may be available when a child is determined eligible for special education and related services.
Who May Be Eligible?
Eligibility is determined by the state and is not determined by Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center. In general, a child must meet the program's eligibility requirements, including being a Texas resident and eligible to enroll in a Texas public school. Participation is subject to the program's application process and available funding.
Children with disabilities
Children who attend private school or are homeschooled may also be identified as having a disability and determined eligible for special education and related services. If a family believes their child may have a disability and is interested in TEFA, the local school district may have responsibilities related to evaluation, eligibility determination, and development of a TEFA-specific IEP.
Important: Having an IEP or receiving therapy does not by itself guarantee eligibility for TEFA or a particular funding amount.
Can TEFA Funds Be Used for Therapy?
Certain educational therapies are eligible expenses under the TEFA program. Because eligibility and allowable expenses can depend on the child's circumstances and current program rules, families should confirm that a specific service is an approved expense before scheduling or authorizing payment.
At BVRC, our team can help families understand the process for accessing our services through an approved education account. Therapy services available at BVRC include:
- Speech Language Pathology Services
- Occupational Therapy
- Physical Therapy
- Pediatric therapy services
Other eligible services based on the child's individual needs and the current TEFA requirements. Eligibility for payment through TEFA depends on current program rules and approval through the family's account.
How to Use Your TEFA Funds at BVRC
Step 1 — Apply for TEFA
Families must apply through the Texas Education Freedom Accounts program. Visit the Texas Education Freedom Accounts website. Applying does not guarantee participation; applications are subject to the program's eligibility requirements and selection process.
Step 2 — Determine Your Child's Eligibility
If your child has a disability or may be eligible for special education and related services, you may want to speak with your school district about the evaluation and IEP process. TEA guidance specifically addresses how families of children with disabilities may participate in the TEFA program.
Step 3 — Receive Your Education Account
If approved, your family will receive information about accessing and managing the Education Freedom Account, including the approved expenses and participating providers.
Step 4 — Select BVRC
Contact us to discuss your child's therapy needs and determine whether the services you are seeking may be eligible for payment through your account.
Step 5 — Authorize Payment
Families are responsible for following the TEFA program's payment procedures and confirming that the desired service is an eligible expense. BVRC will work with families through the required payment process for eligible services.
